Tessera vs Google's Built-in Wallpapers: Daily Art Compared (2026)

By the llcloud team 5 min read

The short answer

Stay with Google's built-in wallpapers if you want a fresh preset image each day, your own photos or AI and emoji wallpapers, with nothing to install. Choose Tessera if what you want is classical art: a public-domain museum painting every day, a gallery you can browse by artist and era, and the details of every work.

On a Pixel, Wallpaper & style lets you pick a preset category and turn on Daily wallpaper, set separate home and lock screens, use your own photos, or create wallpapers with live effects, AI or emojis, all built in. Google's Wallpapers app on Play offers similar daily categories. Tessera is a dedicated art wallpaper app: a public-domain painting every day on home and lock screen, a gallery by artist, era and style, and framing previews.

Before installing any wallpaper app, it is worth knowing what your phone already does. On a Pixel, Google's Wallpaper & style can change your wallpaper every day on its own, and Google's Wallpapers app on Play has offered daily categories for years. Tessera does something narrower: one famous painting a day, from public-domain museum collections. Here is how they compare, using Google's Pixel help pages and Play listing as of October 2026.

What do Google's built-in wallpapers do well?

They are already on your phone. On a Pixel, touch and hold an empty space on the home screen and tap Wallpaper & style. From there you can pick a preset image, choose your own photo, and set the Lock screen and Home screen separately.

The daily option is simple. Tap Change wallpaper, choose a category, tap Daily wallpaper at the top right, and confirm. Your phone then picks a new image from that category on its own. Google's help page notes it does not work with your personal photos or live wallpapers.

Pixel also goes beyond still images. Google's help pages describe wallpapers you can create with live effects, AI or emojis, theme packs, icon styles and colors that match your wallpaper. Google's separate Wallpapers app on Play describes images from Google Earth and partners, separate home and lock wallpapers, and a new image each day from your favourite category.

If you want a fresh look with nothing to install and nothing to manage, this is hard to beat.

Where do Google's wallpapers fall short for art lovers?

They are general collections. The categories on your phone depend on its model and Android version, and they are not built around museum paintings. You cannot browse by artist or era, and the picker does not tell you a painting's title, medium or where it hangs.

On phones from other makers, the built-in picker is the maker's own, and daily rotation may or may not be offered. Google's Wallpapers app on Play was last updated in September 2020 according to its listing, so check that it works on your phone before relying on it.

What does Tessera do differently?

Tessera is only about art, and it treats your screen like a museum wall.

  • A painting every day. Pick a schedule and a new work arrives on its own from a curated collection of classical art. Every work is in the public domain, from open access museum collections.
  • Browse the whole gallery. Filter by artist, era or style, from Impressionism and Baroque portraits to Japanese woodblock prints and Dutch Golden Age interiors. The Starry Night, Irises and Sunflowers sit alongside Monet, Vermeer, Hokusai, Klimt, Cassatt and more than 200 other artists.
  • Pixel perfect cropping. Pan and zoom inside side by side Home and Lock previews, so a wide landscape still frames well on a tall screen.
  • Know what you are looking at. Each painting shows its artist, title, style, genre, medium and museum. Pro adds the story behind it from WikiArt and Wikipedia.
  • Light on your phone. No background service animates your screen. Paintings are cached and work offline, and rotation respects your battery and Wi-Fi settings.
  • Any phone. Tessera runs on Android 8.0 or newer, whoever made your phone. It has no ads and no account.
  • One-time Pro. HD masters at your screen's native pixel density, six painterly filters, five colour grades, unlimited favourites, custom schedules including hourly, and separate Home and Lock crops.

What are Tessera's limits?

It is one more app to install, and it does only paintings. It does not use your own photos, make AI or emoji wallpapers, or change icons and theme colors. Pixel's own colors still follow whatever wallpaper Tessera sets. It needs the internet to fetch new paintings, and HD, filters, stories and custom schedules need Pro.

Which should you choose?

  • Stay with Google's wallpapers if you want variety with nothing to install, your own photos in the mix, or Pixel's live, AI and emoji wallpapers.
  • Choose Tessera if you want a real painting every day, the freedom to browse and frame works yourself, and the details of what you are looking at.
  • Like art but want a live wallpaper? Muzei is a free, open source option. Read our comparison of Tessera and Muzei.

Tessera is free to try alongside your built-in options. A clean lock screen shows off a painting best. If you hide notifications there, AuraDisplay still tells you something arrived with a small light around the camera, as our guide to notifications on Always On Display explains. If downloaded images are filling your phone, see how to free up storage on Android or how to clear cache on Android.

Questions

How do I turn on daily wallpaper on a Pixel?

Touch and hold an empty space on the home screen, tap Wallpaper & style, then Change wallpaper. Choose a wallpaper category and tap Daily wallpaper at the top right, then Ok. Google's help page notes that daily wallpaper does not work with your personal photos or live wallpapers, and menu names can differ slightly between versions.

Does Google's daily wallpaper include famous paintings?

The categories in your wallpaper picker depend on your phone and Android version, so check the list on your own phone. Google's Wallpapers app listing describes images from Google Earth, landscapes and partners. Tessera is built only around public-domain paintings from open access museum collections, with Van Gogh, Monet, Vermeer, Hokusai and more than 200 other artists.

Can I use Tessera on a phone that is not a Pixel?

Yes. Tessera works on any phone with Android 8.0 or newer and sets a normal still wallpaper, so it does not depend on a phone maker's wallpaper picker. It needs the internet to fetch new paintings and works offline once a painting is saved on your phone.

Can I set different wallpapers on the home and lock screens?

Both can. Pixel's Wallpaper & style lets you select Lock screen or Home screen and set each separately. Tessera can apply a painting to the home screen, the lock screen or both, with a side by side preview, and Pro lets you crop the two screens separately.

Is Tessera free?

Yes. The free version gives you a new painting every day, the full gallery with filters, the Home and Lock preview, favourites, history and the automatic daily changer. Pro is a one-time purchase that adds HD masters, the story behind each painting, six style filters, five colour grades, custom schedules including hourly and separate crops.
