Pixel 11 Pro HiLight Not Working? How to Fix the LED Ring
By the llcloud team 6 min read
Quick answer
Most of the time HiLight works and simply has nothing to show: Google lights it only for calls from favourite contacts and for Gemini, with the phone face down. AuraGlow fixes that by lighting the ring for any app you pick. If AuraGlow's light stops, USB debugging is usually off, so a Wi-Fi change switched Wireless debugging off with it. Turn USB debugging back on and the light stays.
You bought a Pixel 11 Pro for that ring of light around the camera flash, a message arrives, and nothing happens. HiLight is rarely broken. Usually Google's settings were never going to light it for that notification, or the app driving it lost its connection. Here is how to tell which, and how to fix each one with AuraGlow lighting the ring for everything else.
Why is my Pixel 11 Pro HiLight not lighting up?
Start by matching what you see to its cause.
| What you see | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| No glow for messages, email or apps | Google's HiLight does not cover them | Add AuraGlow |
| No glow when a favourite calls | Setting off, caller not a favourite, or flash notifications on | Check Google's settings below |
| No glow in Bedtime or Do Not Disturb | Calls set to None in that mode | Change the mode's call setting |
| AuraGlow stopped after a Wi-Fi change | USB debugging off | Turn USB debugging on and leave it |
| AuraGlow stopped after a restart | Wireless debugging not back on yet | Follow AuraGlow's notification |
| AuraGlow dark for one app | That app is switched off in AuraGlow | Switch it on in the apps list |
| No ring anywhere on a Pixel 11 | The standard Pixel 11 has no HiLight | Use a screen light instead |

How do I fix Google's built-in HiLight?
Google's HiLight lights for two things: calls from favourite contacts and talking to Gemini. These checks come from Google's Pixel help page.
- Open Settings > System > HiLight and make sure Use HiLight is on.
- Turn on Calls from favorites and Speaking with Gemini, whichever you want.
- Make sure the caller is a favourite. Open the Contacts app, star the person, then tap HiLight under Contact Settings to pick their color.
- Update the Contacts app. Google says you need the latest version for HiLight colors.
- Turn flash notifications off. Google says HiLight will not show for incoming calls while they are on. The wording differs by version, so search Settings for "flash notifications".
- Check your Modes. If Settings > Modes > (your mode) > People > Calls is set to None, HiLight stays dark for calls in that mode.
Google lists Phone by Google and WhatsApp calls as supported, and the glow is meant for the phone lying face down. Everything else, every message, email, delivery or reminder, never lights the ring with Google's settings alone. That is the gap AuraGlow fills.
Why doesn't HiLight light up for messages or other apps?
As of October 2026, stable Pixel software lights HiLight for calls and Gemini only. A Messages from favorites toggle appeared in the Android 17 QPR2 Beta 6.1, and coverage says it works with Google Messages, glows twice for a new text from a favourite, and is expected with a December Pixel Drop. It stays limited to favourite contacts.
AuraGlow lights the ring for any app you pick, right now. Each notification glows in that app's icon color or a shade from your wallpaper. Pro adds per-contact colors (BETA) in WhatsApp, Messages, Telegram, Signal, Messenger and Instagram. It keeps its own settings and does not change Google's, so your favourite calls and Gemini keep glowing too. Our Pixel 11 Pro HiLight guide walks through setup, and AuraGlow vs Google's HiLight settings shows what each covers.
Why did AuraGlow's HiLight light stop?
Android only lets its own developer tools reach the ring, so AuraGlow runs through Wireless debugging, set up once with a pairing code on the phone. Nearly every stop comes back to that connection.
USB debugging is switched off
This is the first thing to check. Android switches Wireless debugging off whenever your Wi-Fi changes, and when it goes off, the light stops. With USB debugging on in Settings > System > Developer options, a Wi-Fi change never stops it. You do not need a cable, the switch only has to stay on. There is no way to keep the light running with debugging switched off.
You restarted the phone
Android also turns Wireless debugging off after every restart. AuraGlow usually turns it back on by itself when you are on a Wi-Fi you allowed before. When it cannot, it posts a notification asking you to switch it on once. With root, the light returns on its own. Shizuku also works, but it needs starting again after each restart.
Battery Saver or low battery
AuraGlow pauses in Battery Saver and stops below a battery level you pick. Both are on purpose. Turn Battery Saver off or charge past your cutoff, or lower the level in AuraGlow. If Android itself closes AuraGlow in the background, our explainer on why Android kills background apps shows what to change.
The app is not switched on, or a rule is holding it back
AuraGlow lights only the apps switched on in its apps list, so check that the quiet app is on. Then check the rules you set: Do Not Disturb, quiet hours (Pro), face-down only (Pro), and the one-hour pause.
The ring is resting
AuraGlow keeps every light short and rests the ring for half of every ten minutes, to protect the LEDs. On a busy stretch, a gap may simply be one of these rests. No setting overrides them.
Another app is driving the ring
If you have tried other HiLight apps, such as HiLight Studio or HiLight Plus, keep only one of them running so they do not compete for the ring. If the light still will not come back, AuraGlow's diagnostics show what it sees, with no notification content.

AuraGlow works on the Pixel 11 Pro, Pro XL and Pro Fold running Android 17. The standard Pixel 11 has no ring, and there AuraDisplay draws a notification light on the screen instead, as our guide to getting a notification light on Android explains.

Questions
Why is my Pixel 11 Pro HiLight not lighting up?
Google's HiLight only glows for calls from favourite contacts and while you talk to Gemini, and Google says it works with the phone face down. Messages, email and other apps never light it with Google's settings. Check Settings > System > HiLight, make sure the caller is a favourite, and install AuraGlow to light the ring for every other app.
Why doesn't HiLight light up for WhatsApp messages?
Google's HiLight lights for WhatsApp calls from favourites, not for messages. A Messages from favorites option appeared in the Android 17 QPR2 beta, working with Google Messages, and is expected in a December Pixel Drop. AuraGlow lights the ring for WhatsApp messages today, in the app's color, and Pro adds a color per contact (BETA).
Why does HiLight not glow for calls when flash notifications are on?
Google's help page says that if flash notifications are on, HiLight will not show for incoming calls. Search Settings for flash notifications and turn them off, as the wording differs by version. AuraGlow does not change that setting, so check it if favourite calls stopped glowing.
Why did AuraGlow's light stop after I changed Wi-Fi?
Android switches Wireless debugging off whenever Wi-Fi changes and after every restart, and that stops the light. Turn USB debugging on in Developer options and leave it on, and a Wi-Fi change never stops it. No cable is needed. After a restart AuraGlow usually turns Wireless debugging back on by itself, and posts a notification when it cannot.
Can I make HiLight work with USB debugging off?
No. Android only lets its own developer tools reach the HiLight ring, so AuraGlow runs through them and needs USB debugging to stay on. You do not need to plug anything in, the switch only has to stay on in Developer options. Google's own call and Gemini glows do not need Developer options at all.
