How to Hide Videos on Android: Free Options and a Video Vault
By the llcloud team 7 min read
Quick answer
The safest way is an encrypted vault such as Velum: it encrypts each video on your phone with AES-256-GCM, opens with its own pattern, records straight into the vault with its private camera, and backs up encrypted copies. The built-in options, Google Photos Locked Folder, Samsung Secure Folder and Files by Google Safe folder, hide videos behind a lock, but none gives you a recovery phrase or an encrypted backup you control.
Videos are harder to keep private than photos. They are bigger, they autoplay in gallery previews, and a single clip can say a lot more than a still. Android has a few free ways to hide them, and they differ in how well they hide, whether they back up, and what happens if you forget the lock. Here is how each one works, and when an encrypted video vault is worth it.
What are the free ways to hide videos on Android?
| Option | Works on | Holds videos | Backup | Lock |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Google Photos Locked Folder | Android 6 and newer with Google Photos | Yes | Optional, to Google Photos | Your screen lock |
| Samsung Secure Folder | Supported Galaxy phones | Yes, plus files and apps | Move with Smart Switch | Its own PIN, pattern or password |
| Files by Google Safe folder | Android 8 and newer | Files you move in | Not to Google Drive | Its own PIN or pattern |
Google Photos Locked Folder
- Open Google Photos and go to Collections.
- Tap Locked, then Set up Locked Folder, and unlock your phone when asked.
- To move a video in, open it and look for the option to move it to Locked Folder in the video's menu. The wording differs by version.
Locked videos do not show in search, albums, shared items or memories, and they cannot be shared or edited while they are locked. Google is clear on two limits. The lock is your phone's screen lock, so anyone who knows it can open the folder. And items you have not backed up exist only on that device. You lose them if you uninstall Photos, clear its data, or lose the phone. You can turn on backup under Photos settings > Backup > Back up Locked Folder.
On Pixel 4 and newer, you can also send a fresh shot into Locked Folder from the Pixel camera by touching and holding the preview of your last photo or video.
Samsung Secure Folder
- Open Settings > Security and privacy > More security settings > Secure Folder.
- Sign in to your Samsung account if asked, then choose a PIN, pattern or password.
- Turn on Reset with Samsung account. Samsung warns that without it, you cannot get back in if you forget your passcode.
- In Gallery or My Files, touch and hold a video, tap More and choose Move to Secure Folder.
Moving files this way works in Samsung's own apps. Samsung also says files saved in your cloud account cannot be moved into Secure Folder, and that you move Secure Folder to a new phone with Smart Switch. Our guide on how to hide photos on Samsung covers the Galaxy options in more detail.
Files by Google Safe folder
- Open Files by Google, scroll to Collections and tap Safe folder.
- Choose a PIN or a pattern and confirm it.
- Press and hold a video, then choose Move to Safe folder.
Google says Safe folder uses Android's storage encryption, and that if you forget the PIN or pattern you cannot reach your files. Resetting the folder deletes everything in it. Share and Back up to Google Drive are not available inside it, so a lost phone takes those videos with it.
Why is an encrypted video vault the better option?
The built-in tools hide videos behind a lock. An encrypted vault goes further, and Velum is built for exactly what they leave out:
- Videos encrypted with a key that comes from your own lock, separate from the phone's screen lock.
- A way back in that needs no account, like a recovery phrase.
- A camera that records private videos without ever touching the gallery.
- A backup that is encrypted before it leaves the phone.
Velum is our encrypted vault for Android, and videos get exactly the same treatment as photos.
Encrypted on the phone. Every video, its thumbnail and its file name are encrypted with AES-256-GCM, using Google's Tink library. The key comes from the pattern you draw, stretched with Argon2id so guessing it is slow. If you want the full walk-through, read how Velum encrypts a photo. Videos follow the same steps.
Played without a readable copy. Velum decrypts a video as it streams to the player, so no readable copy is written to storage. It also shows no playback notification and no media controls on the lock screen, so a video's name never reaches your lock screen or a watch.
Checked before the original goes. Every import is decrypted back and compared with the original before Velum offers to remove it from your gallery. Your phone asks once to confirm that removal. A video that did not import cleanly is never offered for deletion.
A private camera. Videos you record inside Velum go straight into the vault and never reach your gallery. While a clip is recording, the camera needs a temporary file on the phone. Velum deletes it as soon as the encrypted copy has been checked, and clears any leftover the next time it starts.
A 9 word recovery phrase. If you forget your pattern, nine words open your vault. There is no account and no reset email, so write them on paper.
The free version holds up to 10 videos and 100 photos or files in a vault, and the private camera counts toward the same limit. Pro, by month or year with a 7-day free trial or once for life, removes the limit. Viewing, exporting, sharing and backup never stop, even above the free limit.
What Velum cannot do
Encryption protects the stored files, not an unlocked phone with the vault open. Someone who watches you draw your pattern can open the vault. If a cloud service such as Google Photos already backed up a video, removing it from your gallery does not remove that copy. And if you lose both the pattern and the recovery phrase, nobody can open the vault, including us.
How much space do hidden videos take?
Hiding a video never shrinks it. A minute of 4K video can run to hundreds of megabytes, and a vault keeps it at about the same size, because good encryption adds very little. Three things are worth planning for.
Room to move it in. Any vault that checks its work writes the encrypted copy first and only then removes the original. For a moment, the video exists twice. If your phone is nearly full, a large import can fail. Velum warns in its diagnostics when the phone has under 500 MB free.
Clean up first. Delete duplicates, old screen recordings and videos you already shared before you move the rest into a vault. You will save space and avoid encrypting three copies of the same clip. Our guide on how to free up storage on Android walks through it.
Copies elsewhere. If Google Photos or another service already backed up a video, that copy stays in the cloud. Check and delete it there too, or the vault only hides half the problem.
How do you back up hidden videos?
Large videos make backups slow, so choose a place with room and a connection you trust.
| Option | Where the copy goes | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Locked Folder backup | Your Google Photos | Must be turned on, after backup for your photos and videos |
| Secure Folder | Smart Switch transfer | Samsung says backups are no longer supported, only transfer and restoring older backups |
| Safe folder | Nowhere built in | No Google Drive backup inside it |
| Velum folder backup (free) | A folder, memory card or USB drive you choose | Needs space equal to your vault |
| Velum Google Drive backup (Pro) | A hidden app space in your Drive | Large videos take longer to upload |
What Velum copies is already encrypted, so a memory card or a Drive folder holds noise to anyone but you. On a new phone, the backup opens with your pattern or your recovery phrase. Our guides on backing up private photos and moving private photos to a new phone cover the steps, and they apply to videos the same way.

Questions
How do I hide videos on Android for free?
Use Google Photos Locked Folder. Open Google Photos, go to Collections, tap Locked and follow the setup, which uses your screen lock. Open a video and move it in from its menu. It leaves your gallery, search and albums. Samsung phones also have Secure Folder, and Files by Google has a Safe folder locked with its own PIN or pattern.
Does hiding a video free up space on my phone?
No. A hidden or encrypted video stays on the phone at roughly its original size. Moving it into a vault can even need extra space for a moment, because the encrypted copy is written and checked before the original is removed. If space is the real problem, clear out duplicates and old downloads first, then move what is left.
Can I record videos straight into a hidden folder?
Sometimes. Google says Pixel 4 and newer phones can send a shot from the Pixel camera into Locked Folder. Velum has its own private camera on any supported phone: photos and videos it records go into the vault and never reach your gallery. Each video counts toward the free limit of 10 videos per vault.
What happens to hidden videos if I lose my phone?
It depends on the backup. Google says Locked Folder items that are not backed up exist only on that device. Files by Google's Safe folder cannot be backed up to Google Drive. Velum backs up free to a folder, memory card or USB drive, and with Pro to your Google Drive. The backup is encrypted and opens with your pattern or recovery phrase.
Are videos in Velum encrypted the same way as photos?
Yes. Every video, its thumbnail and its file name are encrypted on your phone with AES-256-GCM, the same as photos, using a key that comes from your pattern. Velum plays a video by decrypting it as it streams, and it shows no playback notification, so the name never reaches your lock screen or a watch.
