Velum vs Files by Google Safe folder: Which Keeps Files Safer?

By the llcloud team 6 min read

The short answer

Velum is the safer home for files you cannot afford to lose. Safe folder has no way back in if you forget its PIN or pattern and no Google Drive backup. Velum encrypts with a key from your pattern, recovers with a 9 word phrase and restores an encrypted backup on a new phone.

Add Velum for the photos, videos and files that matter. Google says a forgotten Safe folder PIN or pattern means you cannot access your files, and Back up to Google Drive is not available inside it. Velum encrypts with AES-256-GCM, gives you a 9 word recovery phrase and backs up encrypted copies you can restore on a new phone.

If you use Files by Google to clean up your phone, you already have a small private space built in: Safe folder. It hides files behind a PIN or pattern and keeps them out of search. Velum is what you add on top for the photos, videos and files you cannot afford to lose, with its own encryption key, a recovery phrase and backups that move to a new phone. This comparison is as of October 2026 and uses Google's own help pages and the Files by Google Play listing for every Safe folder fact.

What are Safe folder's limits?

Google describes Safe folder as a place to hide files and control access with a PIN or pattern. Its help page is also clear about what it does not do:

  • No way back in. "If you forget your PIN or Pattern, you can't access your files." Resetting Safe folder permanently deletes everything in it.
  • No backup. The Share and Back up to Google Drive options are not available inside Safe folder.
  • Tied to one phone. Google says not to copy encrypted Safe folder files from an old phone to a new one, and not to plug in an SD card with Safe folder files from another phone.
  • Fragile storage. Google warns that on rare occasions files can become corrupt or get deleted, and that then nobody can access them, Files by Google included. It asks you not to clear storage or cache with other apps.
  • Gone with the app. The Safe folder FAQ in the Files by Google Help Community says uninstalling Files by Google permanently deletes the files in Safe folder.
  • Lock, not full protection. Google notes that anyone who gains unauthorized access to your device's internal storage may be able to access Safe folder files.

None of this makes Safe folder a bad tool. It is a quick lock for files you could replace. The trouble starts with the files you could not.

How does Velum protect your files?

Velum encrypts each file itself. Every photo, video, thumbnail and file name is encrypted on your phone with AES-256-GCM, using Google's Tink library. The key comes from the pattern you draw, stretched with Argon2id so guessing it is slow. A screen called "What others see" shows any photo next to the same file as it is stored on your phone: random noise, no name and no type. Our post on how Velum encrypts a photo walks through each step.

Every import is decrypted back and checked against the original before Velum offers to remove it from your gallery, so a failed copy never costs you the original. The private camera saves straight into the vault, screenshots are blocked, and Velum locks when you leave or lay the phone face down.

What happens if you forget the code?

This is the biggest difference. With Safe folder, a forgotten PIN or pattern is the end of those files, and the only reset deletes them.

Velum gives you a 9 word recovery phrase when you create a vault. If you forget your pattern, those nine words open the vault. There is no account, so nobody can reset it for you, which is why the phrase matters. Write it on paper and keep it away from the phone. If you want a strong code you can still remember, our passphrase generator builds one from plain words.

How do backup and new phones compare?

Safe folder keeps a single copy on the phone, with no Drive backup and no supported way to copy it to a new device. To take files with you, you move them out first, which leaves them unprotected during the move.

Velum backs up a copy that is already encrypted. Free, it goes to a folder you choose: the phone, a memory card or a USB drive. With Pro, Velum backs up on its own to your Google Drive, in a hidden app space only Velum can read. On a new phone you restore with your pattern or your recovery phrase. Our guides on backing up private photos and moving private photos to a new phone cover both routes step by step.

What about decoys and disguise?

Safe folder is one folder behind one lock, and it lives in an app everyone knows. Velum Pro lets you add more vaults, each with its own pattern and recovery phrase, so you can open a decoy with ordinary photos in it if you are pressed to show your phone. No list of vaults exists anywhere in the app. A duress pattern opens one vault and quietly removes the keys to every other vault on the phone, and that cannot be undone. The Pro disguise shows a Calculator, Notes or Weather icon, and the calculator really calculates. Read what a decoy vault can and cannot do before you rely on one.

Can you use both?

Yes. Keep using Files by Google for cleanup and quick sharing, and move the files that matter into Velum. Open Safe folder, choose Move out of Safe folder, then import those files into Velum. Before you import photos you might share later, our photo location remover strips the GPS data from a copy.

Velum has limits too. It needs Android 11 or newer, it holds files and notes rather than apps, and the free version holds up to 100 photos or files and 10 videos in a vault. If you lose both your pattern and your recovery phrase, nobody can open the vault, including us.

Why choose Velum over Files by Google Safe folder?

  • A way back in. A 9 word recovery phrase opens your vault if you forget your pattern, with no account involved.
  • Backups that leave the phone. Encrypted copies to a folder, memory card or USB drive for free, or automatically to Google Drive with Pro.
  • A vault that moves with you. Restore on any Android 11 phone with your pattern or your phrase.
  • Encryption you can check. AES-256-GCM per file and file name, a key from your pattern, and a screen that shows the stored file as random noise.
  • Safe imports. Every file is checked against its original before anything is removed from your gallery.
  • Protection when you are pressed. Decoy vaults, a duress pattern and a working calculator disguise in Pro.

Questions

What happens if I forget my Safe folder PIN?

You lose access. Google's help page says that if you forget your PIN or pattern, you cannot access your files, and resetting Safe folder permanently deletes the files in it. Velum gives you a 9 word recovery phrase when you create a vault. If you forget your pattern, those nine words open it again. Write them on paper and keep them somewhere safe.

Can I back up Files by Google Safe folder?

Not from inside it. Google says the Share and Back up to Google Drive options are not available in Safe folder, so the only copy lives on your phone. Velum backs up an encrypted copy free to a folder you choose, a memory card or a USB drive. With Pro, it backs up on its own to your Google Drive.

Can I move my Safe folder to a new phone?

Not by copying it. Google's help page says not to copy encrypted Safe folder files from an old phone to a new one, and not to plug in an SD card with Safe folder files from another phone. Move files out first. Velum restores its encrypted backup on any Android 11 phone with your pattern or your recovery phrase.

Is Files by Google Safe folder encrypted?

Google says Safe folder keeps your files secure using Android storage with encryption, and it does not name a cipher. Its help page adds that anyone who gains unauthorized access to your device's internal storage may be able to access the files. Velum encrypts each file and its name with AES-256-GCM, using a key derived from your pattern with Argon2id.

Can I use Velum and Safe folder together?

Yes. They are separate apps and do not touch each other's files. To move something from Safe folder into Velum, use Move out of Safe folder in Files by Google first, then import it into Velum. Velum checks each import against the original before it offers to remove anything from your gallery.
