Questions
Is a passphrase safer than a password?
A long random passphrase is both strong and easy to remember. Six random words from this list give about 62 bits of randomness, more than a typical eight-character password, and you can actually type it from memory.
Are these passphrases really random?
Yes. Each word is chosen with your browser's cryptographic random generator, the same one used for encryption, from the EFF short wordlist of 1,296 words. Nothing is predictable from the time or a pattern.
Is my passphrase stored or sent anywhere?
No. It is created inside this page and never leaves your device. Close the tab and it is gone, so copy it or write it down first.
What is a recovery phrase?
A list of words that can restore access to something if you forget your main password or pattern. Velum gives each vault a nine-word recovery phrase that can also restore a backup on a new phone.
